The Reign of King Rama IX (1946 - present)


Situation in Thailand
King Rama IX is the world's longest reigning monarch, renowned for his tireless work in the area of national development which took him to all parts of the country. His innumerable achievements have resulted in the improved quality of life of his subjects, regardless of race and religion. For these reasons, he is revered as the nation's unifying factor, the heart and soul of Thai people representing all walks of life. Through him, they came to have a stronger appreciation of being Thais with equal status.
Early in the reign was the time of the Cold War which divided the entire world into two camps. While Thailand belonged in the Free World. Mainland China was a communist country. Hence, Sino-Thai relations remained unofficial, while contact was next to impossible and Chinese migration to Thailand came to a halt. It was not until 1975 that diplomatic relations between Thailand and the People's Republic of China was established, allowing their respective citizens to resume normal relations. This also applies to the nation-to-nation relations which has since been close and cordial.
It was during the period 1947 - 1957 that the Chinese community of Yaowarat reached its golden age as Bangkok's business center and leading entertainment district.

Situation in China
Having attained victory over the Kuomintangs, China's Communist Party under the leadership of Mao Zedong established the People's Republic of China in 1949, with the government's seat in Beijing. Administered as a closed country. China underwent an economic reform with the strong socialistic accent. Ensuring was the Cultural Revolution which proved to have wide repercussions on the country's politics, society and economy. It was during this period that communication between the overseas Chinese in Thailand and their relatives in China was impossible and came to complete stop. Mao's death in 1976 signified the end of the Cultural Revolution. Under the leadership of his successor. Deng Xiaoping, China once again opened her door to the world community. Diplomatic ties with foreign countries were revived and the economy underwent a modernization scheme. Ever since then, China has up to the present been making great progress.
