The Reign of King Rama VIII (1934 - 1946)

Situation in Thailand
King Rama VIII ascended the throne at a young age and spent the most part of his reign studying abroad. He returned to Thailand twice, each time only for a short sojourn. Nevertheless, hebacame well loved by his subjects representing all walks of life. It was early in the reign that the Sino-Thai Association was founded, I.e. In 1936, with the objective to foster good understanding between the Chinese and the Thai communities. The government under the leadership of field Marshal P. Pibulsongkram further adopted the policy of seriously encouraging the Chinese to assimilate themselves into Thai society. However, with the invasion of the Japanese army during World War II and the request to use Thai territory as passage-way, the government had no alternative but to comply and cooperate. This brought on a conflict with the Chinese community in Thailand which never concealed its anti-Japanese sentiment all along.
Following the end of the war, King Ananda Mahidol accompanied by the Prince Brother(the future King Bhumibol Adulyadej) paid a cordial visit to the Chinese community in Sampheng in 1946, to the great delight of the overseas Chinese in Thailand. The royal visit effectively eased the tensions that had arisen.
Situation in China
The war between China and Japan was officially declared In 1937, when Japanese army invaded Southern China and took complete control of all coastal provinces plus many other cities, including Nanking. The government by Kuomintang Party was compelled to retreat deeper inland and opted to join hands with the Communists in the drive to put up resistance againt Japan. The war stirred up a general anti-Japanese sentiment among overseas Chinese in Thailand, while both parties rivaled each other in propagandizing their adopted ideologies. After Japan’s defeat in World War II, and given China’s victory over Japan, both parties again resume their fight against each other.

Mao Zedong, chairman of the Communist Party, joined Chiang Kaishek, leader of the Kuomintang, invictory celebrations after Japan had admitted defeat.
